R17 - Interdisciplinary Plenary Panel - Confronting Colonialism: An International Dialogue (OPEN EVENT)
Date: Jun 4 | Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm | Location:
This session directly contributes to the Federation’s goal to build on the
findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and to
contribute to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
This goal is shared by both the Canadian Political Science Association (CPSA)
and the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA). In June 2016, the CPSA Board
of Directors created a “Reconciliation Committee” to report on the
implications of the Truth and Reconciliation findings for political science
and political scientists in Canada. This panel complements the ongoing work
of this committee and the CSA’s committee on decolonization by offering a
high profile interdisciplinary discussion highlighting the scholarship and
activism of three internationally renowned Indigenous women scholars.
This session offers a unique and important opportunity to hear from three
outstanding Indigenous women scholars and activists on the state of
contemporary colonialism and Indigenous efforts to confront and resist it in
Mexico, Australia and Canada. Questions to be addressed are: How should we
assess state-sanctioned reconciliation in Canada? What can we learn from
assessing these efforts in a comparative context? What practices of
Indigenous resistance and confrontation offer the most possibility for
transformation?
